Air Supply is an Australian-English soft rock duo, consisting of English-built-in vocalist-songwriter and guitarist Graham Russell and Australian atomic number 82 vocaliser Russell Hitchcock. Germination and early years: 1975–1980 [edit]

Chrissie Hammond, Russell Hitchcock, and Graham Russell met on 12 May 1975,[1] while performing in the Australian production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical Jesus Christ Superstar.[2] [3] With Hammond and Hitchcock on vocals and Russell on guitar, they formed a harmony vocal grouping in Melbourne, while the show was still playing.[4] Hammond left the song group to form Cheetah and was replaced by Jeremy Paul (ex-Soffrok and later Divinyls) on bass guitar and vocals in 1976.[two] Together, Hitchcock, Russell and Paul formed Air Supply. The group's first single, "Love and Other Bruises", was released in November 1976 and peaked at No. half-dozen on the Australian Kent Music Study Singles Chart in January 1977.[5] It was followed by Air Supply, their debut album, in December, which reached No. 17 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart and achieved gold in Australia.[2] [5] The anthology was produced by Peter Dawkins (Spectrum, Ross Ryan) with Air Supply line-up every bit Hitchcock, Paul, Russell and drummer Jeff Browne, guitarist Marker McEntee and keyboardist, arranger Adrian Scott.[2] [3] Other singles were "If You Knew Me", "Empty Pages" and "Feel the Breeze" but none reached the Summit 40.[v] A national tour followed with Hitchcock, Paul, Russell and Scott joined by Nigel Macara (ex–Tamam Shud, Ariel) on drums and Brenton White (Skintight) on guitar.[2] [3] Brenton White rehearsed but did non perform with Air Supply.

Their tertiary anthology, Dear & Other Bruises, which included re-recordings of some earlier tracks, was made mid-bout in Los Angeles in July–August and released subsequently that year in the Usa on Columbia Records with Jimmy Horowitz producing.[iv] During the tour, Paul left the band, resulting in a new line-up of Hitchcock, Macara, Goh, and Russell, plus Joey Carbone on keyboards, Robin LeMesurier on co-pb guitar and Howard Sukimoto on bass guitar.[three] Paul, in 1980, recruited young man former Air Supply bandmate McEntee in the line-up of Divinyls, fronted past Chrissie Amphlett. Air Supply performed in London supporting Chicago and Boz Scaggs.[two]

Although their music had some commercial success, Russell claimed, on a 1995 DVD, that he and Hitchcock were and so poor that they checked the backs of hotel sofas for alter and then that they could buy bread to make toast. On 21 August 1989, using their old producer and welcoming the return of drummer Ralph Cooper, the duo decided to enter the studio again to record The Earth Is, which was released in 1991 by Giant Records under Warner Bros. Records. The recording contains their hit single "Without Yous", along with singles for "Stronger Than the Night" (with a music video announcing that Air Supply was back) and "End the Tears" and the anthology sold more one million copies. Within the album is a note about Hitchcock and Russell'due south original Musical Director of their coming together place during Jesus Christ Superstar (and long time Ring Member/Orchestrator): "This Album Is Defended to the Memory of Frank Esler-Smith." In February 2018, it was announced that a jukebox musical based on Air Supply'south songs was in production in the Philippines. Created and produced by Naomi Toohey and Dale Harrison,[nineteen] and written by Canadian playwright Jim Millan, the musical starred Mig Ayesa, Rachel Alejandro, Tanya Manalang, Raymund Concepcion and Jamie Wilson. All Out of Dearest: The Musical made its premiere at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila on October xviii, 2018.[20] [21] [22] The musical featured a new song titled "I Was in Dearest with You lot", written by Graham Russell.[23] [24]

In 2020, Air Supply was listed at number 48 in Rolling Stone Australia 's "fifty Greatest Australian Artists of All Time" consequence.[25]

The ARIA Music Awards is an annual awards ceremony that recognises excellence, innovation, and achievement across all genres of the music of Commonwealth of australia. They commenced in 1987. Air Supply were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.[26]
